"Hey Boo Boo. What do you think is in that pic-a-nic-basket?" Well Yogi, it appears to be a box set of CD’s with us and a bunch of our friends!
While working with Rhino Records and Fred Siebert, the president of Hanna-Barbera, Styk and his Burning Bush partner, Frank, found themselves in the company of the perfect combination of quality packaging veterans and highly creative cartoonists. With the vast amounts of art that Hanna-Barbera provided (the tissues and gels alone were piled higher than a stolen sandwich in Jellystone Park) and the huge amount of respect that was had for these artisans of animation and music, the team set out on a kooky design adventure to develop the packaging for Hanna-Barbera’s Cartoon Classics CD set.
Starting with cocktails in hand, which always pairs nicely with design, it was decided who was going to handle what. Frank and Styk were a great team; the thing that made them successful in this endeavor was how well they complemented each other. What one lacked the other supplied; the talents of one individual helped to bring out the best in the other. And since they were working with Hanna-Barbera, another great team, it was determined that Frank would tackle the illustrative portion of the job while Styk in turn headed up the typography and layout.
Burning Bush came up with a number of possible concepts but of course the obvious solution was right in front of them. The way Yogi said "pic-a-nic" ultimately drove the entire packaging concept that would take the form of a picnic basket and house a custom history booklet and the four CD's. The concept was a huge success and if you want to get your hands on one of these puppies you better have a pretty penny. They’re currently out-of-print and going for big bucks on EBay. Needless to say they were smarter than the average bear, hee-hee-hee-hee.
